Barn Fire - Groveland - Tuesday - May 8th, 2007

May 8th at 10:30pm area residences were rocked by the sounds of explosions from a fully involved structure fire in the area of Hunts Corners.  The first alarm from the Livingston County 911 Center called for the Groveland Fire Department to respond to Lakeville Groveland Road in the area of Lee Road for a possible barn fire.

As members embarked to the Stations for apparatus, dispatchers advised that this structure is reported to be fully involved and several explosions have been heard.  Car 32, Groveland Fire Chief Steve Teeter quickly asked for an additional alarm.  Two Pumper/Tankers from Geneseo, Mt. Morris and Conesus were dispatched immediately to the scene.  Groveland Pumper 325 made the initial assault as Mini 322 responded directly to Barbers Pond to establish a fill site.  Other responding unit arrived on scene and began to supply water to this massive blaze.

Due to the amount of water needed an additional alarm was transmitted requesting fill in units at other Stations to respond to the scene.

The building was an L-shaped metal barn.  The main structure measured about 60 feet by 100 feet and secondary structure, 40 by 60 feet.  Both structures were filled with over fifty years accumulation of machinery, farm and gardening equipment and a supply shop for the owners plumbing business.

The blaze was knocked down after a 2 hour master stream defensive attack by firefighters.  Agencies and Departments needed in this emergency were: Groveland FD, Geneseo FD and Ambulance, Conesus FD, Mt. Morris FD, Springwater FD, Lakeville FD and Cuylerville FD, The Livingston County Emergency Management Office and Livingston County Sheriff’s Department.  Major support was given by other Departments as fill in units: Sparta Fire Co., York FD, Dansville FD, Nunda FD and East Avon.

No injuries were reported, some affects were salvaged but the structures were lost.  Story and photos provided by David Macaluso
