SCBA Drill - West Sparta - Tuesday - March 24th, 2009

On Tuesday March 24th. the West Sparta Fire Department along with Dansville Fire and EMS conducted SCBA training in the old grange building next to the Fire Hall on Red School Rd in the Town of West Sparta. A floor plan of 4' walls along with furnishings were  laid out to simulate a ranch style home so multiple rescue evolutions could be conducted throughout the evening.  Story and Photos provided by Jay Lynch.  Photos are located in the West Sparta Fire Department Photo Gallery.

Structure Fire - West Sparta - Friday - December 19th, 2008

The West Sparta Fire Department along with Dansville Fire and EMS were dispatched for a reported trailer fire. While enroute a 2nd alarm was requested bringing a tanker from Sparta, Groveland, the balance of the Dansville Equipment and a pumper from Nunda to stand by. Command went on location with smoke and fire coming from the rear of the trailer. Dansville requested Perkinsville Fire Dept. for a fill in.  Assisting at the scene with the Livingston County Emergency Management, NYS Troopers and Livingston County Sheriff Department, along with American Red Cross.  The cause is still being investigated but preliminary indications are that the fire resulted from a problem with the furnace in the trailer. Barn Fire - West Sparta - Tuesday - July 8th, 2008

West Sparta Fire Dept. along with Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported loader on fire inside the barn. The fire from the loader had extended to the contents of the barn. Mutual Aid was requested from Dansville (one pumper, grass truck) and Nunda (2 tankers and grass truck) to the scene. Groveland provided a fill in West Sparta. Barn Fire - West Sparta - Saturday - July 5th, 2008

On Saturday July 5th., West Sparta was dispatched to a fire at 4034 Rock Spring Hill Rd in the Town of West Sparta. First arriving fire units encountered a barn fire with an exposure problem. Structure Fire - West Sparta - Wednesday - May 21st, 2008

The West Sparta Fire Department and Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported house fire the evening of Wednesday May 21st, 2008 at approximately 8:30pm on Rock Spring Hill Road.  The NYSP Wayland Patrol was in the area and went on location with an attic fire.  While enroute, West Sparta Command declared a working fire and requested a second alarm assignment.  Dansville, Mt. Morris, Nunda, Groveland, and Sparta Fire Departments assisted West Sparta at the scene.  Nunda also provided a stand by at the West Sparta Fire Station, Leicester Fire Department provided a stand by for Mt. Morris, and Canaseraga Ambulance provided a stand by ambulance for Dansville.  The American Red Cross assisted the family.  Investigating the fire is the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management.

 
MVA - West Sparta- Thursday- April 17th, 2008

West Sparta Fire Department along with Dansville Fire and Ambulance Department were dispatched to a reported tractor trailer roll over on Interstate 390 South. Command went on location to find a box trailer full of tomatoes rolled on its side. Traffic was diverted for nearly 3 hours as the trailer was up righted. Grass Fire - West Sparta- Thursday- April 17th, 2008

West Sparta Fire Department was requested to respond to a reported grass fire on Green Road. Command went on location with a grass fire with exposure problems. Burn Drill - Sunday - April 6th, 2008 - West Sparta

On Sunday April 6th the West Sparta Fire Department conducted a live fire training exercise on Stoner Hill Rd in the Town of West Sparta. The object of the drill was a partially demolished house and garage that were being burned to make room for new construction. Smoke Investigation - Patient Not Alert - W. Sparta - February 13th, 2007

The West Sparta Fire Department along with Dansville Ambulance and Livingston County ALS were dispatched to a structure filled with smoke and an occupant still inside. 5801 went on location to find the occupant (suffering from smoke inhalation) had been pulled from the structure by a neighbor. A stove pipe had become disconnected thus causing the house to fill with smoke. The occupant was transported to the hospital with ALS. Structure Fire - West Sparta - Sunday - July 22nd, 2007

Shortly after 6:00am on Sunday July 22nd, 2007 the West Sparta Fire Department and Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported house fire on Kysorville Road between the Dansville Mt. Morris Road and the Kysorville Byserville Road.  Car 5802 went enroute with smoke showing and requested a Second Alarm Assignment.  Car 5802 went on location with a fully involved house fire.  Assisting West Sparta at the scene were the following fire departments:  Dansville, Mt. Morris, Nunda, Groveland, Conesus, and Cuylerville.  Fill in Fire Departments were:  Nunda at West Sparta, Geneseo at Mt. Barn Fire - West Sparta - Tuesday - February 6th, 2007

The West Sparta Fire Department, Dansville Fire Department, and Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported barn fire on Stoner Hill Road the morning of Tuesday February 6th, 2007.  Despite the efforts of the responding personal, there was a fatality involved with this fire.  Investigating at the scene was the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management, the Livingston County Sheriff's Office, and the Livingston County Corners Office. Structure Fire - West Sparta - Wednesday - January 3rd, 2007

The West Sparta Fire Department and Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported chimney fire on Reed Road during the evening of January 3, 2007. 5802 went on location with fire in the chimney and with some extension in the area of the insert. Personnel contained the fire to the chimney area. Dansville was requested to the scene with one pumper and Groveland provided a fill in.  Investigating at the scene was the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management.  Story provided by Mike Levey.

 

MVA - West Sparta - Monday - January 1st, 2007

The West Sparta Fire Department and Dansville Rescue and Ambulance along with  Livingston County ALS were dispatched to a reported one car roll-over MVA on Redmond Road in the early morning hours of January 1, 2007.  Car 5801 went on location with a car off the road upside down in the ditch.  The victim had crawled from the car. Dansville Ambulance with ALS transported one victim to an area hospital.  Investigating the cause of the accident was the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.  Story provided by Mike Levey.

Trailer Fire - West Sparta - Wednesday July 12th, 2006

Shortly after 2:00pm on Wednesday July 12th, 2006, tones were dropped dispatching West Sparta Fire Department to a trailer fire at the intersection of Coffee Hill Road and Rt. 36.  While enroute, a full assignment from Dansville Fire Department was requested.  First on scene Dansville Fire Chief Joe Snyder and his crew found a fully involved trailer with flames coming from the center of the trailer.  Additional tankers were requested from Groveland and Perkinsville Fire Departments.  No one was injured in the fire with the homeowner escaping the flames as the fire started.  Dansville Ambulance crews and Livingston County EMS Medic 78 were on scene tending to firefighters who fought the fire in the 80 plus degree heat.  Story and photos provided by Tom Pearson.  Photos are located in the West Sparta Fire Department Photo Gallery. 

 

Burn Drill - West Sparta - Sunday - July 9th, 2006

On Sunday July 9th the West Sparta Fire Department conducted a controlled burn on Kemp Rd in the Town of West Sparta. The object of the live fire exercise was a house that was being removed to make room for a new one. New Tanker - West Sparta    Wednesday - March 22nd, 2006

The West Sparta Volunteer Fire Department recently purchased a new 2006 International 2000 galloon tanker from Churchville Fire Equipment in Churchville, NY This vehicle became a reality through the efforts of Gerad Levey and Gerald Levey.

Tanker 586 is a 2006 International DT570 330 horsepower 4 door cab. The tanker has seating for 5 with four being air pack seats. Inside the cab, it was also has onboard GPS system. The tank has the capacity of 2000 gallons of water. Tanker 586 is equipped with an automatic 10” Newton dump with attachments that will allow for dumping from the right or left side of the truck. The Newton dump can be operated from the driver. There is a 300 gpm portable pump also on board. Tanker 586 will carry various wildland equipment and equipment for water shuttling operations.

Tanker 586 will replace two tankers. The Old Tanker 586 was sold to the Village of Almond Fire Department and Tanker 587 was deemed surplus and is on the market for bid.

The tanker will be formally dedicated to the Late Senator Patricia Magee and the Late Fire Chief Gerald D. Levey in the coming months. Stay tuned for further updates. Structure Fire - West Sparta - Tuesday February 7th, 2006

 The West Sparta Fire Department and Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported fire in the residence, smoke from the register vents, on Tuesday February 7th, 2006 at approximately 12:15 hrs.  Assisting at the scene was the Dansville Fire Department, Perkinsville Fire Department, and the Nunda Fire Department.  Investigating the cause of the fire is the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management.  Assisting at the scene was the Livingston County Sheriff's Office and the American Red Cross.

Wood Pile Fire - West Sparta - Wednesday - November 23, 2005

Members of the West Sparta Fire Department were called to duty just before midnight, Wednesday November 23, 2005.  First in firefighters found a wood pile, stacked 5 rows deep, on fire against a house.  Flames were to the roof of the one story addition.  It took 2000 gallons of water to quench the flames to the point where the pile could be removed.  The owner of the home spotted the orange glow outside the window and called 911.  Investigation by Emergency Management Services revealed that the wood stove was cleaned at approximately 6:00 PM and the ashes placed in a metal pail out near the wood pile.  Winds which were gusting over 20 mph most likely pushed a glowing ember into the pile.  Crews left the site after 1:00 am.  Story and pictures provided by Tom Pearson.  Photos are located in the West Sparta Fire Department Photo Gallery. 

 

Structure Fire - West Sparta - Thursday November 17th, 2005

The West Sparta Fire Department and Dansville Ambulance were dispatched to a reported stove fire in the trailer at the Johnson Mobile Home Park on Dansville Mt. Morris Road on Thursday November 17th, 2005 at approximately 7pm.  The Groveland Fire Department was dispatched mutual assistance.  Investigating the fire was the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management.  Assisting at the scene was the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.

 
Training Exercise - West Sparta  Sunday - June 5th, 2005
 
The West Sparta Fire Department conducted a control burn on Sunday June 5th.  Participates in the drill were West Sparta, Groveland, Mt. MVA - West Sparta - Sunday - June 5th, 2005
 
West Sparta Fire Dept and Dansville Fire Rescue and Ambulance were dispatched to a tractor trailer rollover near mile marker 31.4. Command went on location to find a box truck carrying citric acid on its side. The driver was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. MVA ~ Haz Mat - West Sparta  October 18th, 2004

The West Sparta Fire Dept. and Dansville Rescue/Ambulance responded to a reported overturned tractor trailer a mile south of Exit 6. Car 5801 went on location near mile marker 31 with a tractor trailer on its side carrying frozen food. One saddle tank was leaking diesel fuel and engine.  There was also transmission fluid on the roadway. Hazmat 1 was called to the scene for additional absorbent and pads. The Spill was contained to the area of the tractor. Assisting at the scene was New York State Police, Livingston County Sheriff office, West Sparta Fire dept. Dansville Fire Dept. and Livingston County Emergency Management Office.  Story provided by Mike Levey.

 

MVA - West Sparta - Tuesday  September 21st, 2004

The West Sparta Fire Department, Dansville Ambulance, and Rural Metro ALS Medic 73 were dispatched to a reported farm tractor rolled over with a subject trapped on Tuesday evening September 20th, 2004.  Responding units found a farm tractor had gone off the edge of the road and rolled over.  Despite the efforts of the responding personal, one subject was pronounced dead at the scene by the Livingston County Corners Office.  Investigating the cause of the accident is the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.
