Structure Fire - Nunda - Sunday - October 28th, 2007

Just before 1:00 AM on Sunday October 28, 2007, Livingston County Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Geer came upon a fully involved structure fire on Route 408 just north of the Halstead Rd.  Responding firefighters from Nunda, led by Chief Brian Wood, immediately called for a tanker from Mt. Morris and a fill in from Genesee Falls Fire Department.  The concrete block building, formerly the Brink's Dairy, was indeed fully involved.  When the first streams of water hit the concrete blocks, cracks developed that made entry into the structure inadvisable.  The fire worked its way into the space between the ceiling and the flat roof and was impossible to reach.  A Drott was called in from the Town of Nunda and the building was leveled.  Cause of the fire remains under investigation.  Fire Investigators Niedermaier, Gehrig and Pearson were on scene all night with the firefighters.  The Sheriff's Office turned responsibility over to the Nunda PD but continued to assist with traffic control throughout the night.  Story and pictures by Tom Pearson.  Photos are located in the Nunda Fire Department Photo Gallery.

Nunda - May 29, 2005.  Nunda firefighters were called to the Once Again Peanut Butter Factory on State St. shortly after 3:30 PM for a fire in their bottling room.  Firefighters, under the direction of Chief Brian Woods, found smoke coming from the building with a small fire in and near a bottling line machine in the Southeast corner of the building.  Plant employees had applied an extinguisher and water to the fire.  Smike ejectors were used to clear the building.  Investigation by Fire Investigators Tom Pearson and Jerry Gehrig of the Office of Emergency Management Services list the cause of the fire as spontaneous combustion of freshly washed and dried towels used in the cleanup of the peanut butter bottling line.  A significant amount of peanut oil soaks the towels and it was determined that the bag of recently dried towels retained enough heat to spontaneously ignite.  Story and photos provided by Tom Pearson.  Photos are located in the Nunda Fire Department Photo Gallery.
