The Conesus Fire Dept. recently Purchased an Air Boat Ice and Water Rescue boat from the Bemis Point Volunteer Fire Dept. near Jamestown NY.

The Boat will be known as AB-340 and is in service as of March 15, 2006. The Conesus Members have spent countless hours the past month training to get the boat in service. Including operating the Boat on Chataqua Lake with Bemis Point Members, and Bemis Point Members coming here for initial training.  The boat will be towed on a "roller surface" trailer by Rescue 349. It doesn't launch conventionally, as once off the trailer it can be piloted right to the ice or water by the operator under its own power.

The 20 foot aluminum, flat hull boat is powered by a 350 cubic inch gasoline motor, and driven by a 5 1/2 foot airplane like propeller. there are no protrusions below its "Kevlar" bottom, allowing for it to go across, water, ice, swamp, and even ground surfaces. It has traversed across the Conesus Lake Ice the past several weekends without any difficulty, according to Chief David Gaylord. "It easily goes back and forth between ice and water with ease".

Equipped with a Livingston county fire 2-way mobile radio w/ "dual com" headset and microphone system similar to that of helicopters. It will carry the Pilot, and 2 rescuers allowing for 1 or 2 victims. A new Flotation device backboard was purchased by the department it will support the weight of a 300lb. victim in water on its own. Structure Fire - Conesus, NY  Thursday - March 17th, 2005

Kevin Niedermaier, Director of Emergency Management Services, reports that fire broke out at approximately 12:10 PM on Thursday March 17, 2005 in a single family home located at 6718 Route 15 in the Town of Conesus.  Kenneth Pressler and his brother Milton were working on a tractor outside the home when they noticed heavy smoke coming from the back of the house.  They tried to extinguish the flames with a garden hose but were unsuccessful in their attempts.  A passing motorist from Lindley in Steuben County noticed the fire and called 911

Chief Dave Gaylord and  members of the Conesus Department responded to the alarm.  Additional crews from Livonia, Sparta Center and Springwater were immediately called.  It took approximately one hour to bring the flames under control.  The structure suffered severe fire damage to the second floor with the rest of the home receiving heavy smoke, heat and water damage.

Fire Investigators Niedermaier, Smith and Pearson from the Office of Emergency Management Services investigated the fire.  The cause of the fire is attributed to a problem with a recently cleaned double wall chimney at the roof line of the main structure.  Before the Pressler’s noticed the fire, it had already spread to the interior of the home making firefighting efforts difficult.

Livingston County Sheriff’s Deputies Merrick and Cartwright were on the scene to assist with traffic control.

The Red Cross is providing assistance to the Presslers.
