Busy Day in Cuylerville - Leicester

Fire District December 30, 2005

At approximately 11:00 AM, Friday December 30, 2005 Cuylerville and Leicester Fire Departments were dispatched to 5835 Gibsonville Rd Leicester for a reported silo fire with possible extension into a barn.  While enroute, Car 13 requested additional tankers from York, Retsof, Perry and Perry Center due to the complex of barns at the farm.  Car 13 went on location reporting a fire in a Harvestor silo with some extension into a barn.  Geneseo Ladder 318 and Pumper 315 were requested to the scene for aerial support.  Geneseo and Retsof Ambulances responded to the scene for rehab and Caledonia and Pavilion provided fill in companies.  After several hours, the fire was knocked down to the point the silo could be capped off to smother the remaining fire.  Investigating at the scene were the Livingston County Sheriffs Office and the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management - C3 Gehrig, C4 Pearson, and C8 McGory.

Later in the evening, at approximately 6:00 PM, Cuylerville Fire and EMS,  Leicester Fire and Medic 79 were dispatched to a reported 2 car MVA roll over with injuries at the intersection of Rte 36 and Perry Rd.  Car 13 went on scene with a minivan on its side and 1 person trapped with 2 more injuries in the second vehicle.  Two additional ambulances were requested from Mount Morris.  After a short extrication by Cuylerville, 1 patient was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital by Mount Morris 836, and 2 patients to Wyoming County Community Hospital by Cuylerville 810 and Mount Morris 835.  Retsof Fire filled in at Leicester during the event as well as providing traffic control.  Investigating at the scene were the New York State Police.

Two Structure Fires in 12 Hours

East Avon Wednesday December 21 and Thursday December 22, 2005

The East Avon Fire Department responded to 2 Structure Fires within 12 hours between December 21st and 22nd 2005.  At approximately 9:00 PM Wednesday evening, the East Avon Fire District was toned out for a reported chimney fire at 2706 Nations Rd, Avon - Tadmore Farms.  Car 27 went on location at the farm's tenant house with heavy smoke from the eaves and declared a working structure fire.  1 pumper from Caledonia was requested to stand by in East Avon House 1, but was rerouted into the scene for a RIT team and water supply.  York TA-174 was also requested to the scene for rural water supply operations.  The first due crew off Q278 mounted an aggressive interior attack while the crew from P275 handled ventilation.  Efforts to contain the blaze were temporarily hindered due to the construction of the farmhouse - balloon construction and tongue and groove paneling in the ceilings.  Car 27 declared the fire under control within an hour.  Geneseo Fire Department was dispatched as the replacement fill in crew to House 1 after returning from their earlier MVA and Geneseo Ambulance 820 provided on scene rehab for East Avon.  Investigation into the cause shows that an improperly installed fire place allowed fire into the walls which traveled to the attic area.  Assisting at the scene with the investigation were members of the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management and Livingston County Sheriffs Office.  There were no reported injuries.

At 7:40 AM Thursday December 22, 2005, East Avon was again dispatched for a reported structure fire.  This one was at 28 Meadowlark Drive, Harper Trailer Park Avon.  NYS Police unit 3E46 was the first emergency responder on scene and reported an "Inferno".  East Avon Chief Andy Eichhorn went on location shortly after confirming the working structure fire in a trailer - with the front half fully involved. Livonia Fire Department was requested to the scene with 1 pumper for the RIT Team and Lakeville Fire Department filled East Avon House 1.  Once again, an aggressive interior attack was mounted and the fire was quickly brought under control.  Cause and origin placed the blame as electrical in the kitchen area as determined by the Livingston County Office of Emergency Management.  Also assisting was the Livingston County Sheriffs Office.   Photos courtesy of Jeff Arnold.

Members of the West Sparta Fire Department were called to duty just before midnight, Wednesday November 23, 2005.  First in firefighters found a wood pile, stacked 5 rows deep, on fire against a house.  Flames were to the roof of the one story addition.  It took 2000 gallons of water to quench the flames to the point where the pile could be removed.  The owner of the home spotted the orange glow outside the window and called 911.  Investigation by Emergency Management Services revealed that the wood stove was cleaned at approximately 6:00 PM and the ashes placed in a metal pail out near the wood pile.  Winds which were gusting over 20 mph most likely pushed a glowing ember into the pile.  Crews left the site after 1:00 am.  Story and pictures provided by Tom Pearson.

Kevin Niedermaier, Director of Emergency Management Services, reports that fire broke out at approximately 1:18 AM Thursday morning, May 12, 2005 on the roof of Building 1 on the Livingston County Campus on Murray Hill.  First in firefighters under the direction of Chief Joe Gervase found flames from the roof on the 5th floor.  A third alarm assignment brought over 100 firefighters to the scene with pumpers from Leicester, Cuylerville, Groveland, Nunda and Retsof.  Ladders trucks to the scene came from Geneseo and Avon with two additional ladders from Perry and Warsaw turned around enroute when the fire was declared under control.  Geneseo brought their new ladder truck that was not officially in service.   Ambulances from Mt. Morris, Geneseo, Cuylerville, Retsof and Dansville were on the scene.

An initial attack was made using master streams from the deck guns of pumpers from Mt. Morris and Leicester.  Firefighting crews reached the roof from inside the 5th floor at about the same time and used the in-house standpipe to complete the knockdown.

The first four floors of the building house the Livingston County Mt. Morris Campus Skilled Nursing Facility.  Facility staff  moved patients as necessary and prepared for total evacuation if it was deemed necessary.  One resident sustained an injury during the evacuation of the 4th floor and was transported to the hospital.

Fire Investigators Niedermaier, Gehrig and Pearson from the Office of Emergency Management Services investigated the fire.  Fire damage was limited to the roof that was being resurfaced.  There was minor smoke and water damage to the 4th floor living area that required the temporary relocation of 8 residents.  The cause of the fire has been determined to be deviation from accepted practices while the roof was being resurfaced with tar.  The contractor responsible for the roof work had left the site at approximately 4:00 PM.
